Pirates, o'hoi!

"Speak like a pirate" Day passed by yesterday and BraSt is having a pirate themed party tonight. I was asked to make them a treasure chest to be used as the prize of a treasure hunt on the campus of Hedmark University College. What I didn't know; they planned the hunt to start 08:00 AM, not PM as I had presumed. shite

I had originally planned to spend the whole day today making the chest, but as a result of a 12 hour misunderstanding, I had to get up at 4am starting the gorram thing. To save time on the build, the frame, or foundation, of the chest was made out of cardboard entirely. Just glued together with hot glue, I got the basic shape in just half an hour.

Halfway there? No, not really.

An electric saw helped me quickly make all the wooden pieces for the chest. Slabbed them on with glue as well. Even though this was pretty quick, the number of pieces, including sanding each of them, did put the working hours past 07:00 before I could start on the detailing.

Stained the chest with a quick drying paint, colour; "dry pine". Just used a permanent marker to colour the hinges black. Planned, and I should have followed through on the plan, to used screws put the hinges on, but ended up gluing them on. Not a lasting solution, but the only one at that moment. Paint dry and hinges, decorate nails and lock put on by 7:45. A short bus trip down town and voilá, chest delivered at 8am, sharp!

Build a small chest out of cardboard and balsa wood. Chest measured 40x24x25cm when finished.

For the party later today, they asked for a pirate flag. Just a traditional black flag with skull and crossbones. A black cotton fabric measuring 100x140cm made up the flag itself. As the flag is supposed to be used in a pub, I painted the design rather roughly. Small detail with the burned holes and teeth saying BRAST.

Light yellow paint, for a bit eerier feel.

Eyelets in two of the corners, if ever used on a flag pole.
